Global Economic Prospects and the Developing Countries is an annual report prepared by the staff of the World Bank's Development Prospects Group . The series provides an annual assessment of global economic prospects as they affect developing coun tries and analyzes the links between developing countries and the world economy , particularly in the areas of trade , foreign direct investment , and other capital flows . This 1997 report projects an increase in the growth rate of global output . The improvement is likely to be especially notable for Sub - Saharan Africa , which grew at around 4 percent in 1995 and 1996 , and for the developing countries of Europe and Central Asia , which are just now starting to emerge from a painful transition process . Although the East Asian countries will have difficulty maintaining the extremely rapid pace of growth that they have enjoyed in the past decade , they are likely to continue to grow strongly , in part because of the liberalization of world markets
