Needle ice, a form of columnar, near-surface, icernsegregation in soils, is increasingly becoming recognized as an important factor in vegetation destruction, soil erosion, frost sorting, and periglacialrnlandform development in both cold and temperaternregions. With the resultant surge in multidisciplinary interest, the reporting of needle ice research isrnscattered through the geological, geomorphological,rnbotanical, ecological, agricultural, pedological andrnengineering literature. This paper collects together allrnthis work into a 26 7-item bibliography, spanning thernperiod 1824-1988. A detailed regional-systematicrnindex is supplied to ease access to those items of mostrnrelevance to a particular need. A call for further references is issued, and comments on terminology arernmade.
