Focus on Writing is a five-level series that prepares students for academic coursework.rnEach book in the series gives students an essential set of tools to ensure that they masterrnnot only the writing process, but also the grammatical structures, lexical knowledge,rnand rhetorical modes required for academic writing. The series provides an incrementalrncourse of instruction that progresses from basic sentences (Book 1) and paragraphsrn(Books 1–3) to essays (Books 3–5). As cognitive research shows, writing is a recursive process. Whenrnstudents practice the entire writing process repeatedly with careful guidance, theyrninternalize the essential steps, thereby improving their writing and their confidence inrnthemselves as writers.rnEach unit in each book of Focus on Writing provides direct instruction, clear examples,rnand continual practice in the writing process. Students draw on their prior knowledge,rnset goals, gather information, organize ideas and evidence, and monitor their ownrnwriting process. Students write topic-related sentences (Book 1), and focus on writingrnan introduction, body, and conclusion for a paragraph (Books 1–3) or an essayrn(Books 3–5). Students learn which writing strategies are best suited to a particular kind ofrnsentence, paragraph, or essay. Whether students are writing a group of related sentences,rna paragraph, or an essay, they produce a complete, cohesive piece of writing in every unit.
