As advancements have progressed in the field of graphic communications, there is still a need for a basic understanding of the concepts supporting the electronic tools used to create images. Understanding how to use Computer Aided Design (CAD) and using CAD to create drawings that communicate useful information are separate skill sets. It is possible to become very proficient using CAD and have little understanding of the graphic standards and conventions that CAD programs are designed to support. Engineering Drawing Problems Workbook Series 4 meets that need by providing the first year engineering student or graphic design student with a basic understanding of the drawing conventions used in industry. This workbook is designed for a first year introductory course on graphic communications or engineering graphics. For the majority of these exercises, only minimal drafting tools are needed. Many plates include grids so students can create these drawings quickly as sketches. The computer plates developed for this workbook provide additional practice using design concepts in CAD. Concepts and procedures are isolated in short exercises that allow the instructor to quickly identify what content the student has mastered and which areas need reinforcement before progressing to more advanced concepts. The use of a workbook format allows instruction to move quickly since time is not spent creating layouts for every assignment. Since graphic communications is such a diverse subject, and many students enrolled in introductory courses are from a variety of fields, we have included simple exercises that illustrate applications in diverse fields, such as electronics, pipe drafting, sheet metal layout, and architectural perspectives, in addition to traditional pictorial and orthographic problems.
